Building Commissioning (Cx) is the process of verifying new construction (or new systems to existing buildings – called retro-commissioning (RCx)) of the mechanical engineering systems to achieve the owner’s project requirements as designed by the architects and engineers. Buildings that are properly commissioned typically have fewer change orders, tend to be more energy efficient, and have lower operation and maintenance cost.
ASHRAE defines commissioning as:
"A quality-focused process for enhancing the delivery of a project. The process focuses upon verifying and documenting that all of the commissioned systems and assemblies are planned, designed, installed, tested, operated, and maintained to meet the Owner's Project Requirements."
